Gerald's professional journey began at the Contra Costa Consolidated Fire Protection District, where he served as a volunteer reserve. He completed his paramedic training in 1984 and joined American Medical Response as an Emergency Paramedic. His career took a significant leap forward in 1985 when he became part of the first group of firefighters/paramedics at the Fremont Fire Department.

Over the years, Gerald advanced to the Fire Captain/Paramedic role, undertaking additional responsibilities such as Operations Staff Captain. In this capacity, he managed several key initiatives that improved the effectiveness of fire safety and emergency services in the community. His retirement from full-time service did not end his contributions; he later joined the Foresthill Fire Protection District, where he played a crucial role in mentoring newer members and enhancing operational strategies.

Expanding Emergency Service Roles

Gerald's expertise also extended beyond his primary firefighting and paramedic duties. He worked as an EMT for Pomeroy Ambulance Services before advancing to become a paramedic with American Medical Response. He also provided vital emergency medical services at the Concord Pavilion for over a decade, handling medical emergencies during significant public events.

His role expanded further when he became a communications specialist for the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) California Task Force 4. Here, Gerald was instrumental during numerous national emergencies, providing essential communication support. He also served as a Division/Group Supervisor on a Type 3 Incident Management Team, managing disaster responses across the United States, including hurricane relief on the East Coast and wildfire containment on the West Coast.

The challenges of the Oakland Firestorm in 1989 and the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1991 highlighted his crisis management and emergency response skills, significantly shaping his professional outlook and capabilities.

Educator and Health Advocate

Beyond his emergency roles, Gerald was passionate about educating others. He taught Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses to healthcare professionals across the Bay Area, leveraging his extensive experience to enhance the skills of paramedics and EMTs in critical care settings.

Following his retirement, Gerald continued to lead an active lifestyle, engaging in various outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. He also strongly advocates the keto diet, which he credits with helping him maintain his health and vitality.

Gerald's passion for adventure is most vividly seen in his enthusiasm for off-road motorcycle racing. He competes in several racing events throughout California and Nevada, including the challenging District 36 cross-country races, the Virginia City Grand Prix, and the Tecate Extreme Enduro. These events fulfill his need for adrenaline and cultivate resilience, discipline, and mental toughness.

His involvement includes volunteering with the US Forest Service and participating in fundraising efforts for muscular dystrophy.
